A grey and gold wedding dress modeled at the end of Saab's show was so ornate and full the model struggled to walk down the catwalk, while peering out from behind her gilded veil.

"In Moscow you can wear a very short skirt. Show your breasts and legs forever. You can wear the most beautiful jewels and it is not vulgar. Try that here in Paris," said Anna Sherbinina, a Russian actress after the Elie Saab haute couture show on Wednesday.

"You must respect every woman and what she likes. We must respect her opinion,Versace," said Saab after the show.

Some designers are eschewing the wider nets strategy to hone in on the clients who are loyal to them. Elie Saab has an enthusiastic following of Arab women, many of whom clapped appreciatively throughout his haute couture show on Wednesday.

Slight alterations to classic designs, a nod to regional tastes and the exclusive allure of the traditional French atelier is proving a useful pattern for today's couturiers looking to stay afloat in a tougher financial climate.

There is also allure in the singular dress from Paris that reflects European tastes and comes from the kind of designer one can only find in the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

Armani paired skin tight trousers with enormous handbags that seemed to draw the attention of Arab clients and Stephane Rolland presented sculpted dresses from thick taffeta and leather that flatter the rounder figures not normally associated with the rake-thin Western acolytes of haute couture.

"They want to go to a real French atelier. There is no real difference in tastes," said designer Stephane Rolland after his couture show on Tuesday.

Last year Christian Lacroix, who created extravagant and some say unwearable dresses, closed his doors because he could no longer sustain the cost of designing dresses by hand.

Some observers note that haute couture, which is expensive to produce and has only a few hundred clients worldwide, is better served by practical designers chasing new money.

Designers justify the price of haute couture — a dress can cost $100,000 or more — by saying it is art, pure and simple. They set the tone and the clients, hopefully, follow with their pocketbooks.

This year's catwalk shows appear to be bearing in mind the old adages that fashionistas from conservative Gulf states favor long dresses, Chinese clients like to see a hint of red and black, the Lebanese like bright colors and sparkle, while Russians look to body conscious clothes.

His dresses which played on nude and earth tones were long and flattering, with full skirts and voluptuous fabrics.

"On one hand you have to think about your clients, your girls. But once you start following them, servicing (just) them, you are finished…" said Aliona Doletskaya, Editor-in-chief of Russian Vogue.

At the haute couture shows in Paris this week, sparkle, sequins and metallic's were in abundance,Primp, reflecting Russian and Arab tastes. Even Chanel, the powerhouse of French couture, made brightly colored cocktail dresses that were a far cry from the sober black dresses of the house's founder.

But others say that if designers cast their nets too wide they risk their unique identity and exclusive status. Chanel remains a powerhouse because most of Karl Lagerfeld's shows still hint at the designs of Coco Chanel from the 1930s.

PARIS (Reuters Life!) – Designers of French haute couture are finding the tastes and pocketbooks of emerging market clients have been a boost for dwindling sales as they spread their commercial nets beyond wealthy Westerners.

PARIS (Reuters) – Fewer than 2 percent of mobile users in the United States and western Europe used their phone to download music in the first quarter, Ed hardy bags showing the uphill task facing Apple iTunes challengers like Nokia.

Services such as Nokia’s Comes With Music and Ed hardy bags advertising-funded start-up Spotify, which both launched in late 2008, have sought to break iTunes’s virtual monopoly of the legal market for digital music.

"Everybody knows that Tocqueville was concerned and worried and that he feared the tyranny of the majority," Carey said in an interview in New York. "Juicy Couture belts The other thing he talks about is culture, about the great dumbing-down of our culture."

Carey said: "As democracy betrays its people, Juicy Couture belts disguising propaganda as news, making education the prerogative of an elite, creating bigger and bigger inequalities of wealth, it betrays the people, who become frightened and angry."

"I knew I could write about New York City in the period," he said. "I wasn’t worried at all. What I was worried about was the French part of it. I don’t speak French, not a word of it."

"Parrot and Olivier in America" is a fictional re-imagining of Alexis de Tocqueville’s journey to America in the early 1800s, during which the French political thinker examined the roots of America’s democracy.

As an example of cultural demise, the 66-year-old writer cites a rise of vapid entertainment on television.

Carey, who is the executive director of the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program at Hunter College in New York, gripes that while people may have been awarded college degrees, they are not sufficiently educated and that a general lack of reading has contributed to a loss of thinking.

CULTURAL DEMISE

Carey, who has lived in New York for about 20 years, explores Tocqueville’s speculation that U.S. democracy could be at future risk of tyrannical rule — and the coarsening of culture that would accompany it.

A Fox News spokeswoman did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Carey, who counts fellow high-profile authors like Don DeLillo and Paul Auster as his friends, said reading Tocqueville’s "Democracy in America" — a common U.S. college text — inspired him to write the new book.

"It’s not to do with technology, we have just accepted that people can’t read," he said. "Something you get from reading words and ways of thinking and argument and connection that you are not going to get from watching an entertainment grab on television."

Positive U.S. critical reaction to the book included the Los Angeles Times, which said "Carey braids his story carefully, lovingly." Salon.com called it "a great novel" whose characters "you can’t bear to part with."

"When a dominant provider of information — I mean Fox particularly — acts not as news but as propaganda for extremists, aberrations like the Tea Party thrive," Carey said, referring to Fox News channel, part of Rupert Murdoch-controlled company News Corp.

He is also unsparing about growing wealth inequality in the country, and that the failure of U.S. mass media to be objective has led to the rise of the Tea Party, the conservative movement that losing Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin has aligned herself with.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Novelist Peter Carey warns Juicy Couture belts against the demise of American democracy and culture in his latest book, targeting what he sees as factors that have led to rise of the conservative Tea Party movement.

It is the first book about the United States by Carey, the Australian-born two-time Booker Prize winner.

According to BYD’s website, U.S. billionaire Warren Ed hardy hats&nbsp, wholesale Ed hardy; Buffett bought a 10 percent stake in the company in 2008.

LOS ANGELES – A rapidly expanding manufacturer Ed hardy hats  of all-electric cars, solar panels and other green products from China announced Friday it will open a North American headquarters in Los Angeles, with plans to begin selling autos in the U.S. by the end of the year.

"Our dream is a green dream," he told the news conference.

"As I’ve always said, what is good for the environment is also good for the economy," Schwarzenegger said at a news conference at City Hall in which he and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa welcomed BYD officials, including the company’s chairman and founder, Wang Chaun-fu.

Since starting BYD in 1995, Wang has built it into the world’s largest producer of rechargeable batteries for cell phones and laptop computers. The company, which employs 150,000 people, also produces solar panels, lighting systems and is working to develop a technology to store solar energy.

City officials said the arrival of BYD Inc. of Shenzhen, China, will initially create about 150 high-paying jobs as the company hires managers, designers and engineers to staff the new downtown headquarters. As it begins to market cars in the United States, officials expect several hundred more jobs to be created in related industries involving service and sales.

It introduced a U.S. audience to its latest model, the all-electric e6 at Detroit’s annual auto show earlier this year. The crossover sedan-wagon model is what BYD plans to begin selling in the United States by year’s end.

Wang said BYD stands for Build Your Dream.

The company moved into the car business in 2003 and began selling the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid, the F3DM, in 2008.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger hailed the move as a Ed hardy hats  coup for California and proof that the state’s promotion of green energy programs is paying off by attracting high-tech, clean-energy companies that will help consumers reduce both pollution and their reliance on foreign oil.

By the end of 2008, Newark’s murder rate had dropped by nearly 40 percent from two years earlier, though it rose slightly last year.

After the killings, Newark jump-started efforts to install surveillance cameras in dangerous neighborhoods, instituted penalties for gun Ed hardy silk scarves owners who fail to report lost or stolen weapons and set up an agreement to give New Jersey municipalities access to a federal gun-tracing database.

The woman was sexually assaulted and cut with a knife, the prosecutor said. She ran screaming and was shot in the head, he said.

The suspects were between 15 and 28 years Ed hardy silk scarves old at the time of the killings, and the three juveniles arrested will be tried as adults. All six suspects face murder, felony murder, robbery and weapons counts in addition to the sexual assault charges against Jose Carranza, the oldest defendant, and Shahid Baskerville, who was 15 at the time.

The survivor "was also marched to her death that night, but she cheated death," McTigue said Tuesday. "She will come before you, and she’ll tell you what she remembers through the pain and trauma of that night."

"For a while, everything was normal, as it should be on a warm summer evening," McTigue said. "Then, at 11:30 and 15 seconds, things changed."

During opening statements, defense attorney Roy Greenman said Godinez was at the playground that night but didn’t participate in the attack. The woman couldn’t identify Godinez even though he was one of the first two people she saw when she arrived at the playground, he said.

That’s when Terrance Aeriel, known as T.J., texted the woman that "it’s time to go," after he saw four more men show up at the playground. By the time police received a 911 call 10 minutes later, the friends had been forced to lie on the ground and surrender their money and cell phones, McTigue said. The three were then taken down a set of stairs to a wall next to the school and shot, he said.

NEWARK, N.J. – A prosecutor on Tuesday described the systematic attack on four college-age friends at a school playground in 2007 that left three Ed hardy silk scarves dead and one grievously wounded in a crime that horrified a city familiar with violence.

"They were marched down, lined up against a wall, and they were each killed, efficiently and methodically by a single shot to the base of the skull," Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Thomas McTigue said during opening statements in the trial of Rodolfo Godinez, the first of six defendants to come to trial.

Harvey, Aeriel and the 19-year-old were friends who Ed hardy silk scarves attended Delaware State University and lived in Newark, inflatable for sale, a city that has become a symbol of urban crime and blight since it was rocked by riots in the late 1960s. Hightower had enrolled at Delaware State for the fall semester.

They noticed two men drinking beer at the playground when they arrived, but they parked their car away from them and sat on some bleachers with the car radio playing.

Killed were Dashon Harvey and Iofemi Hightower, both 20, and Terrance Aeriel, 18. A fourth victim, a woman who was 19 at the time of the attack, was shot and stabbed but survived and is expected to testify Wednesday when the trial resumes. The Associated Press is not identifying her because two other defendants were charged with sexual assault.

Prosecutors plan to put a gang expert on the witness stand who will testify about MS-13, the El Salvadoran-rooted gang that Godinez admitted belonging to when he was arrested in Maryland two weeks after the killings. In pretrial hearings, McTigue appeared to be laying the groundwork for a theory that the slayings were part of a gang initiation rather than a random robbery gone awry.

Using the survivor’s statements, McTigue described for the jury an evening that began with the four friends driving to a school playground around 10 p.m. to socialize and listen to music.

She also identified other defendants as the ones who did the shooting and wielded a machete later linked to the attack, Greenman said.

While not minimizing the horrific nature of the crimes, Greenman said, "reasonable doubt is all over the place. The state is counting on your emotions to be so inflamed that you will lose your reason and want to punish somebody for what happened. I ask you to please fight that urge."
